Plan a DIY job before you start
Most DIY problems start before the first tool comes out. Ten minutes of planning saves wasted trips to the shop and stops a small job becoming a big repair.
Ask four questions first
- What exactly am I doing? Write the job down in one sentence, such as "Hang a 60 cm shelf above the desk".
- Is it safe for me to do? Gas, most electrical work and anything structural need a professional. Module 6 explains why.
- What do I need? List the tools and materials, and check you have them before you start.
- What could go wrong? Think about hidden pipes and cables, dust, mess and what happens if you have to stop halfway.
Allow more time than you think
Jobs nearly always take longer than expected. Start early in the day, so you aren't rushing or working in poor light, and so that shops are still open if you need something.
Clear and protect the space
- Move furniture out of the way, or cover it with dust sheets.
- Protect floors, especially when drilling or painting.
- Keep children and pets out of the room while you work.
Know when to stop
If something doesn't look the way you expected, such as an unexpected pipe, wire or crumbling wall, stop. It's always cheaper to ask for help than to fix a mistake.
