Road and gravel bikes: what's different
Road and gravel bikes look alike, but they're built for different surfaces. This lesson shows the differences that change how you look after each one: tyre width, clearance, gearing and brakes.
Key points
- Gravel bikes take wider tyres, often 38 mm or more, and run at lower pressures
- Most gravel bikes and many newer road bikes use disc brakes
- Gravel riding brings more mud and grit, so the chain needs cleaning more often
- Almost every job in this course applies to both types of bike
